Kahng Sang-Kyoung

Abstract
This study aims to examine mental health research trends involving the articles published in the Journal of Mental Health & Social Work (JMHSW) with specific focuses on the changes in research populations and research perspectives. Specifically, this study aims to examine (1) distributions of research themes in terms of research population(individuals with disabilities vs. others) and perspectives (problem focused vs. growth oriented), (2) whether distributions of research themes vary by times, (3) whether research themes are influenced by contemporary values of mental health services. Samples included 410 articles published in JMHSW between 1994 and 2013. In order to examine research themes of articles, content analyses were done. In order to examine research trends, descriptive statistics and graphs were utilized. Major findings are as follows. (1) The distributions of research themes were ¨ç ¡®Individuals with no disability-Problem focused¡¯(143), ¨è ¡®Individuals with a disability-Problem focused¡¯(99), ¨é ¡®Individuals with a disability-Growth Oriented¡¯(95), ¨ê ¡®Others¡¯(60), ¨ë ¡®Individuals with no disability-Growth oriented¡¯(13). (2) The distributions of research themes varied by times. (3) Research themes were likely to be influenced by contemporary values of mental health services given that the numbers of articles on individuals with no disability have increased with time. Based on these results, both limitations and implications of the research were discussed.
